Sleep Routine for Curly Hair

How do you sleep with curly hair? Sleeping with your curly hair is much easier than it seems! There are a few tried and true methods that will keep your curls bouncy and frizz free all night. You can play with each approach to see what works best for your curls.

Option One - a satin pillowcase. The fabric of your pillowcase can be a big contributor to the amount of frizz you have when waking up in the morning. Cotton and flannel pillowcases have textured fibers that can cause snags and frizz in your hair (no thanks). The smooth texture of satin will protect your curls from snagging while you sleep. An added bonus is that these pillowcases are inexpensive! Cheap, easy, done!

Option Two - Wear a sleep cap or buff. A satin sleep cap or bonnet will keep your curls tucked in tight all night. There are endless options to try out on Amazon or your favorite Etsy shop. This is a fun and stylish option to keep your curls fresh while you snooze. A buff is a tube shaped piece of fabric that encloses your curls in a protective cone (like a cocoon) while you sleep. Buff’s come in tons of fun prints and patterns and are easily purchased on Amazon as well.

Okay, you made it through the night. When you wake up in the morning it is now time to refresh those curls. Often times, they faired so well while you slept you don’t need to do anything. But, we aren’t always that lucky and we often need to refresh our curls to get their bouncy shape back after a night of beauty rest.

Have you had much luck refreshing your curls after sleeping? It can be a frustrating process to figure out what works best for your specific curl type. Like all things curly hair, there is no one solution that works for everyone. We all have a unique curl pattern and texture. But that is part of the fun too! You get to explore what your hair needs and it’s so gratifying when you figure out what works for you.

The best place to start is with a mister bottle and your favorite early cream or gel. Section off your hair into smallish sections. Mist each section then rake through a small amount of cream or gel. Repeat this process across your whole head and finish with a good diffusing. Since you are only misting your curls, not drenching them, this entire process should take about 15 minutes. Much better than another wash day or defaulting to a messy bun!

Don’t get discouraged. Curly hair is a journey, it takes time to figure it out but you will (and you will be so glad you did)!
