Curly Hair Styling Routine
How do you wash and style your curly hair? Of course, every curly girl has unique curls but this method will help all curl types get the most out of wash day!
First things first - how often should you be washing your curly hair? As a general rule of thumb, one to two times a week is a good routine once you mastered sleep care and refreshing (see that article here).
Step 1 - Cleanse
Choose a shampoo that is free of sulfates, silicones, oils, and parabens. Some great product options include Loma Nourishing and UNITE.
Step 2 - Condition
Curly girls alway needs moisture! Do not get carried away, some products can really weigh your hair down and prevent your curls from thriving. Avoid shea butters, coconut oils, and other heavy oils that will hold down your curls while creating build-up. Products like aloe-vera and essential oils are great ingredients for healthy curls!
Step 3 - The Scrunch
You are going to want to apply your product to soaking wet hair. Put your bath towel aside and scrunch on the extra moisture with a micro-fiber towel. You can also use an old t-shirt. This will help prevent frizz caused by rough fabrics.
Step 4 - Product
Knowing which product will work for you may take some time. In general, I recommend a volumizing foam like Deva or Loma. These products add volume but, most important, they control frizz. After foaming you should apply a curly cream or gel (depending on your prefrence). It is best to apply these products to small sections. Work a pea size amount of product into each section, then use a wet brush or your fingers to rake the product through your curls.
Step 5 - Air Drying or Diffusing
Whether you are air drying or diffusing you can still plop your curls. Plopping helps scrunch up your curls and tighten your natural curl pattern. Depending on your curl texture, you may want to plop your curls anywhere from 10 to 20 minutes (less time for already tight curls). Plopping will help decrease the overall drying time. Once you are done plopping, you can choose to air dry or diffuse if you want tighter curls with more volume. Any diffuser will work. The key is low and slow. Low heat, slowly move the diffuser through your curls to avoid frizz.
There you have it! A simple, but very effective, guide to beautiful curls every time you wash and style.
